I have a question for all the people who have already had children, and who are even getting ready to have their first.... i am 22 weeks pregnant and i have a midwife. this is my first baby and i was just wondering weather i should go natural or not??? i am not sure that i will be able to handle the pain but i atleast want to try.. but now that i have been watching all the birth shows im so scared of the pain. so i wanted to know what it's really like and how other people are going to do it or how they have done it in the past.....

I wpould go as far as you can without pain relief and see how you go!
I left it till the very end and then had gas and air which i have to say is good stuff!
It is your body i wouldnt bother making a birth plan ,i did and mine went out the window!

honestly that is a personal decision. I would say if you are intrested in "trying" a natural birth then go ahead and do it, but keep an open mind. Don't feel like a failure if you choose to get some iv meds or even an epidural. talk to your mid wife and make sure that you are giving birth at a place that will allow you to have both options. As far as the needle thing trust me it is much much less painful then contractions. I was never so happy to stick a big needle in my back ever! Just do what feel right at the time and do set your mind aganist anything.

I have a 2 1/2 year old son and currantly 36 weeks and 5 days pregnant with my second. Through out my entire pregnancy with my son I really was unsure what direction to go in. I looked up IV Meds since I was afraid of the whole epidural thing. But after reading up on IV Meds I knew that this was not an option for me. So then I started asking questions about epidurals. The day I went into labor with my son I still had not made the decision as to whether or not I was going to have an epidural. My main issue with an epidural was the fact that this was my spine we where talking about. I feared the worse. I did eventually have the epidural. I ended up having a c-section with my son so I would have ended up having the epidural anyways. This time around I will be going in for a planned c-section so I will be given a spinal block.

What I would recommend for you is definately try for natural since it sounds like this is the route you want to to try. Just let your midwife know that you want to try for a natural birth but that you want to leave your option open for pain medications.

Ok i am 30wks 4days prego with my second i had no pain meds at all with my daughter. It was a lil painful but not unbarable. I was thinking about not having any meds this time around but this baby is already almost the size of my daughter when she was born at 4lbs 12oz so i am thinking of having some pain meds this time around.

I made a birth plan with the intention of going all natural - no meds. no epidural, just lamaze techniques. Because my water had been broken for 12 hours and my contractions weren't getting any stronger, they gave me Pitocin. This causes contractions that are more painful than natural contractions. So...after 6 hours of Pitocin I was begging for the epidural, and I have not regretted it at all. This time I'm getting the epidural for sure!!

Personally I am all of the drugs, but I do want to go through the majority of labor with out them. I want to be able to stand up and walk and shower for as long as I can stand it. Being vertical helps move the baby down. So in the end I am sure that I will go with the eipdural, but only when I can no longer stand the pain. At my hospital they let you control the dose with a button so I can get the min amount to jsut ease the pain, but not be 100% numb or I can go all the way for the max amount. I like that alot, because with my son I could still feel when it was time to push.

I had the button too - it was great! The thing that sucked so much about the Pitocin is you're not allowed to walk around. I think I would have handled it better if I could have gotten up, but being confined to the bed made me crazy!!

ya having to lay down and not move was the hard part for me too. My son was born face up so I had sooo much back labor and the epidural did not work on that at all.

I was induced with my first and they wouldn't let me out of the bed throughout the labor so I ended up having the epidural after the pain got really bad. I held on as long as I could. I have heard that it's better going thru the first transitional stages of labor if you can be mobile. I'm sure I will end up still getting the epidural though.... because I can still remember the pain even with it! But, I really admire everyone that can/will go thru labor naturally. :)

Hi kristina!
I tried both ways and I have to say that I am not sure which way I preferred. I loved the 'unatural way' with the epidural cause I could focus 100% on the baby cause Icouldn't feel personal pain, but with my other baby I felt everything, so I guess it was neat to know what the birthing experience is like naturally, but I kind of thought personally, that it is overated. It just depends. I would go in with an open mind and if you need painkillerw, ask for them, if not, good for you! Either way you are still a courageous woman and either way you are having a baby. I honestly didn't feel like one way was better emotionally over the other. Good luck!

I'm totally planing on natural, and I'll start taking special clasess for it soon. We will also hier a doula. Not sure why but I think natural is the best way to go. Of course I didn't go threw it yet but in my mind, this is how I've always wanted it to be.

Name: jillw | Date: Dec 21st, 2006 9:30 PM
I think that is great VM2B. A dula is also a great idea. they have them on staff at my hospital. I plan to use her to help with pain. Even though I plan to have the epidural whith my son it only helped the stomach pain, but most of my pain was in my back. If that happens again I want someone there who is experienced in helping with back labor. I know that the people who will be there with me will be afraid of hurting the baby if they puch too hard on my back and she will understand that I need lots of pressure.

I had an Epidural with my 3 kids and definately going to have one in about 5 weeks when Iam due..I recon it was less painfull having a baby and recovering then it was getting my 4 wisdom teeth pulled out on the dentist chair. I had a emegency C cec with my first and it was a tuff recovery though.. My last bub I was induced and I actualy had the epidual before the contracions started.. I still worked my butt of pushing that baby out!!!! Stuff having no pain releaf.. Iam a sook but Iam not stupid!
