I just posted and told everyone that my little girl finally decided to join us on the 23rd. She is 4 days old tonight. I guess i'm just the over protective, omg what do i do type of person. My lil one gives these screams that sound chilling...there kinda like shreeking...just out of the blue. I've been told it could be her having nightmares, or it could be bad gas or cramps, i dunno. Worst part is I don't know how to calm her down other then feeding her. Any advice?
Also I cannot get her to go to sleep in the basinet by our bed, but being she's only 4 days old I can understand she's probably feeling lonely and wanting to be with her mum. Any ideas on how I can get her to sleep on her own without being curled up with me?
Also she has jaundice and they sent us home after 4 very long tiring days in the hospital, and they want to see us again on saturday and do another test to see if her jaundice level has gone up or not. I'm so scared that it has, if it has she has to be admited again and watched. I won't be leaving her side if that happens, but still. any advice from anyone on any of this?

Christina - how often are you feeding her and how much? are you breastfeeding? i know this is going to sound ridiculous, but try not to be so nervous. newborns can detect uneasiness in their mothers and this in turn makes them uneasy and upset.

because my lil one is only 4 days old and has jaundice so i've been told by several nurses and doctors to feed every 3 - 3 1/2 hours. I do that roughly. But she eats like a pig and is constantly hungry. I'm supposed to wake her up at night to feed her, but i'm so exhausted after just being let home from the hospital lastnight that i just sleep with her in my arms, cuz she just cries hysterically if i put her in the basinet..she did it at the hospital too. I am trying to breastfeed, but I dont have much milk right now..I pumped today and I didn't even get an ounce out. So i just bottlefeed her.
I'm trying to stay fully relaxed and calm, but it's soo hard. I keep thinking about her having to be admited again and just start crying. I'll go nuts if that happens.

Christina, I feel for you girl. I've gone through all of this with my little girl too. I posted on Enjoy being pregnant post about the gas issue-check it out. As for only calming her down by feeding, I have the same problem. My Gabriella's gotten a tiny bit better but not much. Her daddy can occasionaly calm her down for a few minutes but with me she knows I'll cave in and feed her. It drives me crazy b/c she's usually already full and just wants to sleep with my nipple in her mouth. And like your little girl she doesn't like put down in her bassinet. She sleeps so much better being held. It takes me hours to get her in it to sleep. I feed her, put her down she sleeps for 5 seconds then opens her eyes and fusses. So I get her up for awhile then start all over again. I have to be careful not to feed her too much b/c she spits up the overflow. My doctor said young babies often eat more than they should, not knowing it. But it's the only thing that really calms her down. Did they tell you to keep her near a window with the currents open when the sun's shining? The sunlight gives them Vitamin D to help clear up jaundice. I know I haven't been much help, but hopefully knowing someone else has gone through the same things will give you some peace of mind. My sympathies for what your going through...

the best was to tell if she has gas is when she squeels does she curl up her little legs bringing them closer to her belly?if so then it's a good possibility it is gas.at one month old my son used to get gas really bad at times, i used to give him warm water with a little sugar in it and that helped. you can also lay her across your legs belly up and rub her back, or lay her on her back and do a bike paddleing motion with her legs gentally drawing her legs aginst her belly, take turns with both her legs so that they press a little bit against her belly hopefully releasing the gas!!! I really hope this helps a little hun

did you feed her formula in the hospital? do you think colic is a possibility this early?

Have you tried wrapping her up tightly(swaddling) her?
Babies love it and they feel secure like this.
You need to relax a little, I know it is hard, with my first, I called the hospital everyday with questions.
If you want to breast feed , I would stay away from the pump at first. You will not have tons of milk yet, but the more you nurse the baby the more milk will come. Right now it is not really full milk either. Nusing is a great bonding, with a child-I could not nurse with my second- so if want to nurse, and she is in bed with you it is easy to nurse when you are really tired too, compared to the bottle.

Yes we fed her forumla in the hospital, i had to she wasn't getting enough milk from me. I think colic is a very high possibility.
I'm scared a bit tho cuz she's a lil yellow today and well she's got a doc appt at 3 this afternoon and there going to test for the biliruben results and ifs gone up there going to admit her to the hospital and put her in an incubator. I know it's not life threatening but i'm just hating it.

Yay my baby gets to stay home with me. Her billyruben level dropped so yay! I've just got to breastfeed alot more often and pump as much as I can said the lactation consultant. So things are going very well for now.

my son was born with Jaundace as well, and was in the neonatal intensive care unit, I wasn't allowed to bring him home until they did a culture test and checked billyruben levels... he was being fed for the first day and a half through an IV in his belly button, but then they weined his IV dosage lower and allowed me to breast feed, But the effect of being weined off the IV made him very sleepy and he wasn't feeding so I was giving him a bottle in the hospital because it was less work to get milk out of a bottle for him, I tried breast feeding when I braught him home but he just didn't seem to take... I think I would like to trry breast feedingg again with this one, hopefully it will work out!
