I am writing a paper for my child development course and was wondering if anybody would bewilling to help me. My topic is the cost of preparing and raising a child. My question to this group is after finding out your family was pregnant, how did one start to save?, what kinds of things were you saving for?, What was being purchased in preparation for your child?, and how much ended up being spent in preparation for your child?

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all very much and good luck

How we started to save: My husband and I both put 10% of our incomes into a 401K through work. We also opened another savings account.

We were saving for: The fact that I would no longer be working, the cost of extra health insurance, we also bought extra life insurance. We're saving for college too.

What was purchased in prep. for child: A crib, dresser, cradle, car seat and stroller, glider and ottoman, doctor/hospital bills. I don't know, we probably spent a couple thousand.

my husband and I already put 200.00 per week into our savings and we both have 401k plans. We already have 2 children and we but savings bonds for their school 100.00 each per month. once our baby is born we will start those up for this baby. My parents also invest in their education. Since finding out we are pitting and extra 200.00 per week into the savings becuause I will be taking off 12 weeks of leave and it is not paid. I also plan to only return to work part time for a while. Our goal is to have 6 months of living expenses saved. We can live off of my husbands check, but it will be nice to have the savings just incase.

to prep for the baby the first thing we bought were bunk beds for our 2 boys they will now have to share a room. we have not gotten other things yet, but our plan is to buy one large (bed, dresser, car seat, stroler etc) item per month and buy smaller items each week until we have everything we need.

Our health ins cost will not go up becuase we already have a family plan, but we did buy extra life ins.

I am sure that there are many more unexpected things that will come our way, but in life you always find a way to work things into your budget and adjust. If you have any other questions you can email me at [email protected]

When we first found out my daughter was pregnant my husband and I started saving money the only way we could. We don't spend ANY change. If something comes to even 1 penny over we break the dollar and save the change.
I talked to the credit union we use and they have something called a "Sock it Away" 6 month CD. You can open it with as little as $100 and add to it daily if you want to. After 6 months you have 10 days to decide what ou want to do with it, after that it automatically rolls into another 6 month sock-it CD. We already have over $100 saved up so I'm gonna be doing that next week.
Just a thought, it might work for others to. With three teenagers at home, and now a grandbaby on the way...it was the only thing we could come up with.
God Bless!
