Just curious when all you woman knew it was time to go to the hospital to have your baby...
Are you supposed to go when your water breaks .. ?
or is it possible for you to have really close contractions and be in labour without your water breaking ?!

im afaid i wont know if im in true labor or not when infact i am.. and end up leaving it too late and not making it to the hospital !

Most women's water doesn't even break. It is VERY possible to have really close contractions and have to go or feel imense pressure or pains and you feel you JUST need to go.

I worried about that too.. I was like.. they are gonna think I am so stupid to not know if I am in labor... but somepeople go to the hospital 3 times a week thinking they are in labor and its no big deal... if in doubt GO... lol!

Your doctor should give you some guidance on this. My doc's policy (with my first) was to call the office if I was having contractions that were consistently 5 minutes apart for at least an hour OR if my water broke. They wanted me to call before going to the hospital - not sure why...My water broke and I wasn't having any contractions so I kind of took my time calling the doctor, then they sent me right over to the hospital. I'm not sure, but I think if I had called during regular hours and said I was having contractions that were so many minutes apart, they might have had me come into the office and checked me, which then of course avoids the problem of going to the hospital in false labor!

But my point was....ask your doc what they want you to do.

Your water doesn't have to be broken in order for you to be in labor. Infact the doctor ended up breaking my water. As far as knowing when it was time to go to the hospital they normally say when your contraction at atleast 5 minutes apart. I didn't end up going to the doctor until my contractions where 3 minutes apart only because I was not aware that I was in labor. I actually called my doctor because I just wasn't feeling right.

My doctor told me the same as mara -- if you're having contractions 5 min apart consistently for an hour, or if your water breaks. And if you think you are, go to the hospital. If they send you home, they send you home....better safe than sorry!

Rosey You'll def. know when the real thing happens, with first babies it's usually when the contractions are 5 minutes apart and lasting for a minute or longer or if your water breaks. Your Dr, should let you know what he or she prefers for you to do and when. How far along are you btw?

oh yeah and your water doesn't have to break for it to be time to go to the hospital, not all womens water breaks even in full blown labor some women have to get their water broken

my mom had 3 kids and her water never broke, they had to break it at the hospital, you should go when you start having contractions 4-5 min apart for an hour, then you should go, and they say after your water breaks you have an hour before you need to go to the hospital

when I had Anika they told me to not come to the hospital until my contractions were consistently 3 mintues apart for at least an hour. BUT if your water breaks, you should go in immediately.

My water didn't break on it's own. My doctor had to break it for me.

i found that braxton hicks felt WAAAY different than the real thing so that's how I knew.

I was induced with both of my kids... Don't know... You will know when they are full blown contractions... Believe me...
