We take him out every hour or two to the backyard in a specific spot and he will usually go but a few minutes after wwe get back in he will go on the carpet, thank you for your advice.

Hello Mellisa, well potty training can take up to a year if not done correctly. Most often a dog doesnt train well because the owner of the dog is not consistant with the training.

I suggest crate training, some think it is a cruel manner of training! I however think it is the most efficient way to potty train!

Start by purchasing a crate, it should be big enough for the dog to stand and turn around in. You dont want it to big that will only give him room to relieve him self.

Put him in the crate, every 2-3 hours take him out directely to his potty spot. As he goes tell him he is a good boy! then bring him directely in and place him back in his crate.

You can take him out to play but remember to supervise him. If you see he is going to relieve him self where he is not supposed to, clap your hands loudly to startle him. Then take him out immediately to finish.

Limit his water intake to only 3-4 times a day, do not give him water access after 6-7 pm. Do not have him feed from a self feeder that will only make it hard to regulate his bowel movements.

Take him out first thing in the morning prior to feeding and again with in an hour after feeding. If you are consistent with it he will train fairley quickly!

Most importantely be patient! do not yell at him for accidents and never rub his nose in his wast! Do not use his crate as a punishment place, always make it a pleasent place for him!

Also Boxers are difficult breeds for training so he may take a bit more work. Good luck!

lindalu you are always harping on crate training! This is not a potty training method. This is why it takes years. Consistency and every 15 min potty breaks control of the water bowl. create training is for safety!
Speaking about potty training I just got a new pup had her a week and she is fully potty trained. She is trained to walk to the door and paw/cry.
Locking a dog in a cage is not cruel it is the owner who gets mad when the dog pees in the GD cage that is cruel. "Out of sight out of mind".

T-rabbit I dont wish to get in to a debate with you about the proper potty training methods. Crating is most definately one of the most affective potty training method. Not only is crating helpfull with potty training it is also good for keeping the pup out of harm. If properly used it is a wonderfull tool for potty training!

I have assisted many individuals for some time with the proper crate training methods and have always had great results! No it is not the only training method out there but it is the most affective method!

If you have another method of potty training that you think will also be beneficial than please post it! Im sure Mellisa would like to hear of other methods of potty training that may be helpfull!

Also... by advising crating, it is not sugesting that the pup be put in the crate tucked away in a corner to be forgotten about. As I said before crating is recommended as a tool to aid with potty training as well as safty!

You have your way I have mine. I agree to disagree.
I call it the baby sitting method. Real simple you follow and keep eyes on contact at all times. When unable to do so potty break then crate. When going out to potty rub paw on door then repeat out. This being a boxer it will take quite a long time. Patience is a virtue.

No my methode is not if you dont succeed then crate, my method is crate and you will succeede!

Do you know how many dogs every year a seriously injured because they can not be supervised every second of the day?

Not all dogs train the same and crating is a healthy un cruel manner of of training not only for potty but for many other things.

But thats ok you have your way and I have mine! I have not found crating to be at all harmfull to the dog. If any thing the will view the crate as a comfortable safe place for the dog to when needed.

Okay I am going to foolishly jump in here. We have crate trained our dogs in the past. But the thing that I hate about it, is that it took me FOREVER to feel comfortable leaving my older dog out of it. now he does great. He doesn't have accidents in the house when we are gone, but when we first started to leave him out, he would always run and hide in his crate. We had to create a new "safe" place for him.

Thank you all for your advice, i didnt mean to start a fight over different ways to train a dog, i understand that there are alot of different ways to do it so that doesnt mean that one way is wrong and the other one is right it just depends what you are more comfortable using and what works for your family. We have decided to just take him out every hour or so and hope that he will catch on. Again thankyou for all of your advice.

Mellisa hun you didnt start any fights! You are rite, there are a couple diffrent ways to achieve the same resulst. It all depends on ones life style! and how much time they have in a day to follow the pup around. What ever you decide I hope you have luck and get positive results in the shortest amount of time!

Momof3 you do hold your breath when you finally feel your dog is ready to spend more time out side his crate. I have found that once they show you they are able to hold it for a couple hours then they are ready to have more free time out side the crate.

Crating is a tool! it is used to set a potty scedual for the dog. When the pup can demonstrate he is able to hold it for a longer period of time he gains more free time out of the crate. Eventually he will be able to hold it untill you take him out! Then he will be trained!

It is so good to hear your pup has trained well with no more accidents! Yaaaa!!! good job!!

oke doke here goes mellisa.... i have been told to make sure your dog has three square meals a day, but only leave the food down for 20 minutes no more, when you do this, and keep up with it, it will give your dog controlled bowl and blatter movement, if he eats whenever he likes that's when you run into problems. if he has a particular spot he like to go on the carpet get pepper yes i mean as in pepper that you eat and sprinkle alot of it in the spot where he goes, this should stop him from weeing on the carpet as it deturs them from their scent and they hate the smell once he's used to the smell not being there he shouldn't go there anymore, and you can vaccume the pepper up, well i hope this helps you and good luck, bu i do think that you will be just fine. chantel:)

Thanks for the pepper trick!!! Do you just leave it done, or vaccuum it up right away?

Iv never tried pepper, I have tried an enzyme neutralizer that removes the smell all together. It can be found at any pet supply store.
