hello everyone, I hope everyone had a happy holiday season. We got a new puppy a few weeks ago (her name is Rielly), and she is the sweetest little thing. Last week I noticed she was acting funny (she wasn't eating that much, had runny poop, and was not frisky). I took her to the vet, and was told that she has Parvo (not sure if I'm spelling that right). The vet said that it could cost a couple of thousand dollars to try to treat her, but there is no guarantee that she will get better. So I have decided to put her to sleep. It breaks my heart, but I don't want her to suffer in an way. I guess my question is, How do i tell my 3 year old son that the puppy that he loves will no longer be here?? Any advice would be great. Thanks!

one more thing, would you suggest that I go get another puppy right away, or should I wait?

Hello momof1! So sorry to hear of your loss! I understand about the $ thing and not wanting the pup to suffer. For myself ( although I know it's hard when they're that young) I tried to tell my girl that..the pet is very sick. the docs cannot help them anymore. And is going to be in heaven with all of the other pets. Where they can run and play and be happy. And...GOD will take very good care of them and loves them very much! I will probably get much slack on that. But, that is how we've always handled the death of a pet in our home. I just tried to reassure her that although that pet will no longer be here...they and us, will be okay!!
As far as another pup, do what you think is right in your heart for you and your family and home. Also, there is a web site that ALONE has put here in PETS that you could look up that really helps in explaining how to tell your children about the loss of a pet. Hope things work out for you!

just so you know you have got to clean your house and yard with bleach. Parvo will stay in your yard and kill any other pets you get.

Im sorry for your loss. I have a dog who survived parvo and it was costly but well worth it to me. You do need to clean everything with bleack for your colored carpets you can use clorox 2 in a spray bottle or you can use the clorox disinfecting spray it is more expenseve than a jug of clorox 2 i just mixed a cup of each and sprayed all my carpets then let it dry and vacumm. spray your yard with straight bleach and wait one month to get a new puppy and make sure a new puppy has been through its first 2 sets of parvo shots here where i am we can buy them at the feed store and give it our selves. That helps on the cost. Then keep your puppy in a kennel til the last shot. Then you should be ready to go!!! good luck and i hope this helps on the parvo and what to do after stuff.

Momof1, I am so sorry! T-rabbit is correct! you really need to clean any thing the dog came in contact with. I would suggest any dog items such as toys, beds, blankets ect... throw them out and clean carpets. It is true once it is prescent it can be difficult to get rid of. I would wait a while to get another dog , be sure the virus is no longer present first. I am truly sorry! I do know how it feels to have to say good buy to a loved one! My hart go's out to you!

hi there i have created a website about dealing with pet loss euthanasia and how to tell your child it is
four-paws-heaven.piczo.com just copy and paste the link. i am so sorry to hear about Rielly and you are in prayers. i think that you should leave it a while before getting another puppy as you and your family need time to grieve for your puppy. love alone xxx

well i am srry for that. my dog had to be put to sleep be cause of som kind of liver desiese or sumthin
but to tell ur 3 year old dont say u can get another one right away. then when his grandma dies he will want to go and buy a new one. but i would not get one untill u clean all the things with bleach and then u can. it does not really matter if u get a new one right away. Dragraught

Pet owners spend tons of money on puppies with parvo. Veterinarians usually will do blood transfusions on them (which costs a lot of money). I've seen it so many times at the vet I work at, and they usually don't make it. It's so sad. You did the right thing. I would wait a while to get another puppy, you have to make sure that the area that the other puppy was in is bleached. I think getting a new one will help your son forget about his loss. I don't know if he would understand or not, but it's probably a good idea if you do some type of ceremony.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and suggestions. Rielly has out down (I'm glad she is not suffering anymore). My son asked about her for the first few days, and I told him the Rielly had a boo boo, and had to go to sleep. And he seemed satisfied with that answer. The house seems kinda empty without her. I know we only had her a couple of weeks, but it's amazing how it doesn't take long for a pet to become a member of your family.
I had Chem Dry come in and professionaly clean the carpets, and I have bleached the areas that I could a couple of times. I think I'm going to wait away before bringing in another pet. When the right one comes along, we'll know!
