I grew up with a Pit bull/boxer mix. He was wonderful. He lived 14yrs and was loyal and protective until the end. He was very patient with us and never let any harm come to us. He was not hard to train, according to my parents. He always understood what was needed of him and he never bring any sort of trouble to my family. Now I am married and am looking for a puppy for myself. If any one know where I can get a pupy please email me rogue [email protected]. Thank you.

I just moved from my college dorm room into a house that isn't in a great neighborhood. I'm looking for a companion and a watch dog. I found a pit/boxer puppy of 7 weeks at the Humane Society. He is very playful and loves to lick my face. I already got him to sit for me. I put an application in for adoption and I really hope to get him but my parents are concerned. My mom, especially, has been telling me stories about these breeds and how vicious they can get. I have been reading all of the stories on this website and they seem like perfectly fine pets if they are trained correctly. So which is it? Are these dogs good to have or bad? Also, if I train my dog to be friendly and not to chew or bite, if the time were to come when I needed protection, would the dog still protect me? And if so, doesn't that mean that there's the possibility that a dog could mistake roughhousing among my friends and me to be a predator, and would the dog then instinctively attack my friends?

We have had a pit/boxer mix for 12 years and she is the sweetest dog. We have 3 other dogs and have had other strange dogs in our yard and she has never fought or bit any of them. She was 3 months old when our youngest daughter was born and grew up with two other children that were 8 and 10 when we got her. She was wonderful with them. People are always concerned we have a pit mix until they meet her. My youngest daughter was bit in the face when she was 7 between the eyes and lip and nose and required numerous stitches from a plastic surgeon but it wasn't a pit it was a friends Golden Retriever, so you never know - I don't think the breed makes a difference. Our dog is still happy, friendly and playful even at 12. We love the pit/ boxer mix so much we just got a new puppy that is 8 weeks old. She is sweet and smart. Met the parents and they were non aggressive and seemed like very good dogs (Boxer dad, Pit mom).

I'm also looking for advice on my boxer/pit bull puppies. They are brother and sister and 6 months old. I love them, they are the sweetest dogs I have ever had. But in the past couple of days, they have started to fight with each other and with one of my other dogs (Beagle/Hound Mix). These are very vicious fights. I'm actually afraid that one may be killed, it is so bad and I can't seem to stop them when this happens. They have always had play fights but now something has changed. What to do?

Pitbulls and an occasional hybred have been in my family since long before I was born. With any dog, you have to assert yourself as the Alpha. If you don't you are asking for all kinds of trouble. Almost all large breeds need a much more assertive form of dicipline. As long as you are not aggressive with a leashed dog, the best way to show you are the boss is to walk them with a choke collar. It's the same situation as training a horse not to run to the barn. As soon as the dog loses focus on your dominance, correct them with light tugs on the leash. When they submit give them praise with a little slack. My 78 lb Blue Blood Pit loves walks, and is a perfect gentleman in all situations. Disipline, socialization, and excercise are 3 key ingredients to a healthy, happy dog!

Regarding your discolored pit: The coloration doesnt have much to do with if you have a purebred or mix. Look at say a Jack Russel (Parsons)Terrier. Their colors run from pure white to black spots or liver and black spots running together. It's just a gene/pigment thing. The physique of your bull is key to deciding if he's pure or not.

NATALIE: I use Well Coat. It comes in tablet form in a bottle. You can find it at most pet stores. Also, we use Kelco shampoo and conditioner on our dogs. When they dry they get brushed out good with a fine brush. Your pit is always going to shed, but these steps have reduced the hair in our house a bunch. Good luck! - Sully
