I am looking for someone who might know how to help a child that has tight muscles. My son is 18 months old and I just joined this forum yesterday. I am a working mom and my mom takes care of my son while I am at work. She takes him to his physical therapy so I really don't get to see what is being done, but whatever they are doing doesn't seem to be helping. I need to learn how to help him loosen up so maybe he will start moving a little more. Does anyone know any helpful hints?????

I just found this site, saw your message and knew I had to respond. My daughter had tight muscles. Does your son have any other medical problems? My daughter had heart and lung problems along with several other things. I don't want to scare you, but we did not know about the other problems our daughter had until the last 2 months of her life. We knew about the tight muscles since birth and tried PT along with massage therapy. Her neurologist started her on Tegetrol which helped for a while, but they were never able to diagnosis her muscle problem so we never did get any answers.
As for the PT help, ask your son's therapist to write down the exercises they are doing with him so you will know what to do at home. I would also recommend going to other doctors until you get some answers as to why your son has tight muscles, if you don't already know why.
Again, I do not want to scare you, but we were in shock when we found out about the life threatening problems our daughter had and the only symptom before that was tight muscles.
Please email me if you want to talk more about this, I will be happy to listen. Here is my daughter's web site if you want to read more about her story: http://www.geocities.com/nchsmom/sarah.html
My email is [email protected]

My daughter also has tight muscles. She has severe PVL. We do alot of stretching and moving all day long. Play time envolves alot of stretching. In the begining she wasn't to fond of all the stretching but now I think she finds it fun. She is 6.5 months 4.5 corrected.

Hello my name is Rachel and i have a daughter with severe CP. I do find that PT helps but not in all ways. SOmetimes you can stretch so much but it doesnt seem like you get anywhere. We see an orthopedic doctor for ortho braces and we have been doing the botox injection in her calfs, hamstrings, feet, toes. It really is a miracle how loose they can get with this. Botox can be used for many diffrent things including loosing up muscles. I would really try to get this for your child. But when u get the botox intensive therapy is required after or it will not take affect. Really it is a blessing that they have this

Yes physical therapy, and you can do passive range of motion as well. That is the only sure way to help keep muscles from tightning aside from muscle releases. And that only will work for a short time or as long as theripy is performed.
