Hello, I am a teen parent. I didnt find out that my baby had clubfoot until he was born. I had no idea what it was. I had a 3d ultrasound and they never mentioned it to me. My baby got his casts wen he was 2weeks old and had them until he was 5 1/2 months old. He had what was called SEVERE clubfoot. right after i would put on his brace all day. Once he started wanting to stand i started putting on the brace less and less. By the time he was 8 months i stopped completly putting on his brace. he started crawling and standing and walking around the tables, but the i put him to stand he's still really weak. lately ive been trying to put on his brace but he yells and screams. It was worst then when he first got his braces. I kno it was wrong to take away the braces. He is supposed to wear his braces until he is 4 years old only at night.. I was wondering if there was any one out there that stopped putting on the braces and still got good results. My baby is now 13 months and still isnt walking.. How old was your baby when he/she started walking? Thank you.

make sure clothes snap at the croch makes diapering easier. as for the car seat with the casts they will fit fine but when yoiu get to bracing it gets tricky we rolled a thick blanket to prop feet up because they were to wide to fit and it worked well. the casts cover most of there legs so ours lived in onesies until he was out of casts of course he was a spring baby so he didn't need much more than that.

I'm no mother (because I'm 12) but congrates on the baby boy! I was researching in science on clubfeet when I stumbled across this chat room. I don't know is I can help you, but this is what I found:
1) Clubfeet causes the feet to not grow as much as they should, causing lack of balence
2) It's cureable
3) The child can wear normal shoes (most likely)

That's about all I know right now (although I'm pretty sure children with clubfeet can sit in a normal carseat) but if I find out more I'll try to tell you.

I am holding my three month old daughter as I type....she is wearing her dennis brown brace. It is her first week in the brace...even though it comes with it's own list of new challenges it feels good to be in the next phase of treatment.

She was born in February and was casted first when she was three weeks old. The casts do not hurt them although, they are uncomfortable. Each week when the cast was changed it took about 24hours for her to settle into the new position. It was a lot of nursing and I gave her arnica too.

I never had a problem with the carseat. We had long drives home from the doctor and she was fine. The moby wrap didn't work because her lgs couldn't bend into fetal position. I carried her in a sling and the ergo with an infant insert...it was strange at first with the bulk of her cast. But it worked out just fine as we got used to it. Oh and the aden & anais swaddlers available at target were great because they were so big. I could swaddle her casts and all and she would sleep great.

It was a challenge to keep the cast clean. I was using cloth diapers but switched to disposables because the blow-outs tend to go up the top instead of out the sides. The good thing is the casts are changed every week. Sponge baths get old too. Good thing they don't get too dirty at this age!

I really like the soft fiberglass wrap casts better than the plaster...they are less bulky and lighter. Making it easier for them to wiggle. I would look into using them rather than plaster if you have a choice.

Footie pj's are usually a bad fit. Most of the time the snaps can't snap together. Onesies work great and rompers with foot holes and snaps all the way to the end at the ankles...these will also come in handy with the brace to come. Regular pants can fit...I just found it easier to change her (especially messes) with snap offs.

My daughter had the tendon surgery at two months. They were going to do the surgery under general anesthesia. Until my research showed that it can be done under local in an out patient procedure. Hence, NOT disturbing nursing and far less stress and disruption to us. They did the surgery that way and I am so glad I spoke up! Do what is best for you all!

Now she is in her brace! I am loving giving her baths! She gets REALLY uncomfortable in her brace. She is also great at slipping out of it. I have found that socks with grippie words on the bottom that are thinner work best to keep her in it. I also use a topical and oral arnica to reduce swelling and pain in her feet.

The carriers I used before no longer work because the brace either spreads her legs too far apart or not far enough. We have moved into the baby bjorn...putting it on with the brace is kinda tricky at first. But worth it when she can sleep on me and I'm hands free!

Once I let go of my own projections of how it "might" feel and accepted I really feel like it helped her out too. Showing her she can still kick and play despite the extra weight and challenge. Baby massage is great too!

I hope I helped! Having just been through the first bit...it's all so fresh with me! Blessings to you and your little one!

My son was born with a clubfoot and is now 18 months old and doing super well. He seems to be more active than my eldest.
My son was in a cast for about 7 weeks & then in a brace 24/7 for about 6 months after that. I used all the same baby gear that I used for his big brother. He fit fine in a regular infant car seat & stroller. It was hard to use the baby pouches & sling with a cast & I wouldn't suggest it with the brace. All clothes fit fine, but you won't be able to use the footed pjs with the brace. You will have to cut off the feet on the pjs or just stock up on the nice warm button down pjs with no feet ( sometimes hard to find). I went to a kids Consignment store & bought the winter footed pjs for cheap & didn't mind cutting the feet off. When buying clothes look for outfits that have button pants. So much easier to change the little ones diaper because that brace is a pain putting on.

You child's feet will be fine with treatment. Once you get into a routine, it won't be such a big deal. You will be amazed on how many people you will run into who has a clubfoot or their child has one.

I wish you the best of luck. & Congrats on you new addition!

I may not be a lot of help but I hope that I am. I was born with a clubfoot. I wore a brace to try to train my bones to grow that way and that didn't work. I ended up getting surgery and that was the best solution. I wore a cast and drug it around with me when I would crawl. My calf of that left is smaller than the one on my left leg because of the delay of muscle development because of my cast.

My daughter was born with club foot 14 years ago ( due to sittiing like a Buddha inside me) she was plastered from 6weeks to 6 months then had 1 op at 6 months then another at year all I can say is expect the questions you'll get from the public, I had many comments like did you drop her or oh how did she break her legs ( at 6 weeks old I think not ) but I can say you won't need anything different to care for your baby appart from as they get bigger so does the cast and you'll notice your arm muscles getting bigger due to you carrying around the weight , normal car seats are fine even with the casts. One word of advice if they dont cast straight away they may give you exercises to perform on their feet please make sure you carry these out religiously , I did and my daughter only needed an op on her left foot as good stretching corrected her right foot but the left was the worst affected so an operation was inevitable for the left. Just enjoy your baby technology is fabulous nowadays !!

Hi my daughter is now 24 but i remember like it was yesterday we used a regular car seat and used strechable fabric on any anything going over the casts. My daughter had 17 surgeries total and what i found is other moms judged me as they thought my child had been injured which wasn't the case.So be patient and never make your child feel different and let them do anything physical they want to do and have fun and love them with all you got.

Shorts with crotch snaps are great incase your baby has to wear a cast. It helps with keeping them cool and makes it easier to change their diaper. strongly suggest a walker as soon as they can bear weight on their legs. It helps to both excersise their muscles but also makes them more independant. also, learn the excersises and no matter if they tell you they are not helping continue daily with them. They told me my daughter would not take her 1st steps till she was at least 2 1/2 years old. I did the excersises 3-4 times every day even after they told me it was not helping because of her upcoming {1st} surgery. She had surgery at 6mnths and was running around on her own by 10 mnths!

Okay so I had a detailed ultrasound around 20 weeks and everything came out great. Baby was perfect. Had another at 29 weeks and it showed my daughter had a clubfoot on her right foot. If it didn't show on the first one or all of the other ultrasounds(I've had about 7) then what are the chances the perinatologist just misinterpreted it. I mean the baby I cramped in there at 29 weeks or maybe it was the position she was in or the position the tech found her at?? I don't I need help with this?

My baby was born with unilateral left club foot
He was casted from one week old he is now 3 months and now in his brace. I find it easiest with snap crotch outfits. I did newborn clothes and now 3 month outfits sucessfully. He even wore one shoe lol. You will be fine.

I was born with severe club, tarsal coalition and drop foot I just wanted to let you know that I did have a number of corrective operations and wore braces. But not to worry I was able to participate in everything I wished to plus I seemed to excell with the arts naturally. I do admit id get extra gifts and being doaded on was nice. Lol. I was not disable I was stronger as your son will be. Also treatments have become less evasive so don't worrie.

I wish you and your family strength and love.
