Controversy over Endemol organ show

ITN - 1 hour 20 minutes agoA show in which a terminally ill woman gives her kidneys to one lucky contestant has sparked controversy in the Netherlands.

BNN are set to air The Big Donor show on Friday where the 37-year-old woman will choose from three people with kidney problems.

She will make her decision based on the contestants' history, profile and conversations with their families and friends. Viewers will be able to send text messages advising her during the 80-minute show.

BNN says it wants to highlight the challenges in getting donor organs as a tribute to BNN founder Bart de Graaff, who died of kidney failure five years ago, despite several transplants.

But ruling coalition parties Christian Democrat (CD) and the conservative Christian Union have called the show "wretched" and "unethical".

The show is produced by Endemol, the company that pioneered Big Brother in 1999.

Why not just auction them off to the highest bidder?? I think this is really sad. Is she going to give one kidney to 2 people or 2 kidneys to one person? What about the poor hopeful that goes away with nothing??

It's absolutely sick! I can't believe it! Horrible...makes me very angry.....these people begging for an organ like this.....the woman must be mad. There is NO way I could ever do anything like this.

It is utterly demeaning to EVERYONE who's involved.

I can't believe what passes for normal behaviour in today's society............

Perhaps they could start a gameshow where people who need triple bypass surgery could answer questions - the winner gets their surgery.......the losers could be provided with free oxygen and painkillers until they die!

I've seen autopsies done on TV before...that didn't bother me one bit. THIS is disgusting!! It's like a sick form of wheel of fortune. They are making a game show out of some poor soul's life or death situation for "entertainment" purposes. Everyday I am amazed by how low some people can go.
