Hey

I could do with a bit of a hand with this p/folio. Could you tell me the 5 main effects that smoking has on the body? It doesnt need to be detailed. Just the names or something and I can do my own research and find some gruesome images. I'm gonna use the fear approach to try and frighten the lil buggers into not smoking! hehee

Remember....Dont be a butt head....dont smoke (genius!) hahaa

here is what I found on a web site

WHAT ARE THE EFFECTS OF SMOKING?

Effects
The effects of smoking will vary from person to person and depend on such things as:

a person's susceptibility to chemicals in tobacco smoke;
the number of cigarettes smoked per day;
the age when the person began smoking; and
the number of years of smoking.
Immediate effects

Smoking one cigarette immediately raises a person's blood pressure and heart rate and decreases the blood flow to body extremities such as the fingers and toes.
Brain and the nervous system activity is stimulated for a short time and then reduced.
A smoker may also experience dizziness, nausea, watery eyes and acid in the stomach.
Appetite, taste and smell are weakened.
Other effects of cigarette smoking

Smokers typically experience shortness of breath, persistent coughs, reduced fitness, yellow stains on fingers and teeth and decreased sense of taste and smell.
Smokers have more colds and flu than non-smokers and find it harder to recover from minor illnesses.
Smoking can cause impotence in men, while women who smoke are less fertile than non-smokers.
People who smoke tend to have facial wrinkles appearing much earlier and, in general, look older than non-smokers of the same age.
Smokers have an increased risk of developing:

respiratory infections such as pneumonia and chronic bronchitis;
emphysema (a progressive and potentially fatal lung disease);
heart attack and coronary disease;
cancer of the lung, throat, mouth, bladder, kidney, pancreas, cervix, stomach;
stomach ulcers; and
peripheral vascular disease due to decreased blood flow to the legs.
A person who is dependent on cigarettes may find that they experience withdrawal symptoms when they cut down or stop smoking cigarettes. These can include:

increased nervousness and tension;
agitation;
loss of concentration;
changes to sleep patterns;
headaches;
coughs; and
cravings.

Thanks Winn.
All I know is my Dad died of smoking. He was only in his late 60's he could have had about 20 more years. But he was stubborn. He died this past Jan, and spent his last 5 years in and out of hospitals for cardiac and resp. problems and could not go anywhere because he had to be on his oxygen all the time. Very sad. I think it is stupid to do that to yourself.

i never have colds or flu's maybe once every 5 years i may find myself in bed for the day. the less fertile for woman thing....mmmmm not here...gee if i was...imagine how many i could of had...LOL

my grandmother smoked since she was 13yo...they actually smoked and sold marijuana, back in her day.
she lived to 87 years emphasemic free (well i dont remember her puffing)...i personally think it runs in the family HOW susceptable you are. IMHO

nicola
ive been smoking since i was 13...so 16 years.
i have reduced fitness...that could be because im overweight :-)
blood pressure is fine
cardio is fine
cholestrole is fine

dont doubt damage has been done....but not as bad as some who smoke the same amount of years, which i put down to family genes :-)
good luck on your paper

Whatever Marija. Of course some people are more succeptable to some effects than others. My dad never got cancer, but had all the heart and lung issues. Please do not try to justify your choices. If you are an addict and cannot give it up, that is fine, but you will only hurt yourself.

Name: marija | Date: May 29th, 2007 6:15 AM
LOL layne no she did not....grow the stuff...hehehehe. Cant say whether or not she smoked it she never said....im just remembering an advertisement she had from when she was younger, from the local store ....selling the stuff...LOL

homemommichele
whatever marija?....dismissed as nonsense is it?...oh thats right your a nurse ...i forgot
it was just my opinion....I HAVE NO PROOF :-)

I was answering Nicola's question ....and telling HER how in MY CASE these statistics or ailments that are associated with smoking DONT HAPPEN TO EVERYONE...and are GENERAL and not to be taken as gospel....just giving her another side to the smoking saga.
my grandmother was NOT an anomaly....there are 4 other life smokers in my family...aged 60, 67 and 72...all fit and quite healthy, not suffering from the above ailments that Winnmom posted. Which is why i said genetics may play a part into Cancer or No Cancer
Please dont assume i am attempting to JUSTIFY in any manner my smoking habit.....I was explaining how i am and how others in my family have been ....a DIFFERENT view.

BUT AS A SMOKER i thought Nicola might appreciate another take on it....which is what i gave....it wasnt a post about how I CAN SMOKE because my grandmother, aunts and uncle smoked for 60 odd years and it did nothing!!!!

it is a disgusting habit...i have no will power and am addicted to cigarette smoking....is that better?
