I have an 8 month old little girl who isn't crawling yet. Every once in a while she will puch herself up on all 4's only to fall right back down. When i notice her trying to push herself up half the time her knees slide back down. Shouldn't she be on her way to crawling? Is there anything i can do to encourage her besiides putting a toy just out of her reach?

Hi Cheryl...well to tell the truth I dont recall what the pros say...but I am recalling my own...my daughter started at about oh say 7 months...maybe a bit more. My son on the other hand let me know he could do this at five months one day...and oh what a surprise. Anyway ... try sitting on the floor with her and just out of her reach...and outstreach your lovin arms and ask her to come to mommy. This business of crawling is a lot of work for a tiny one..requires all the muscles..takes a bit for them to find the balance on hands and knees...but before you know it you will be wishing she would have just stayed put! LOL! Keep up with the toys out of reach too and constantly encourage.

Mommy has powers she is yet to discover (LOL) baby will work her hardest to come to you...not to far mom...and encourage...encourage.

Food for thought.

You know my daughter didnt crawl until she was 9 or 10 monthes. But I put those little Gerber Stars in line and learned the army crawl. And befor I knew it she was up on her hands and knees. Fastest crawler you ever seen!! hehe

Angela...that is just too cute...what a great idea. Cheryl just thought too......make sure she has her sleepers off or at least something on her feet for grip/traction...even on carpet. Helps give them that little extra...ya know ability to push forward. Too same is true when they start to walk. Shoes do help to steady also.

Each child is diffrent hon...(course you know that) but the point is there really isnt a rule I dont think. Not to worry in otherwords..she will be movein lickity split before you know it.

I would not worry one bit. My daughter was late at rolling over, crawling, and walking. There is not a think in the world wrong with her. So just encourage her and when she is ready she will be mobile.

Cheryl, they all develop at there own pace. My son was 10 months, my daughter 8 months. Just make sure she has some floor time and she'll learn when shes good and ready.

Thank you all so much. i will keep playing on the floor with her and try to be a little more patient. I know once she starts i will wonder why I wanted her to start crawling in the first place.

Hi Cheryl I have ran a in home child care for 15 yrs. It always amazes me how every child is different. They all have rolled, pulledup, crawled, walked and talked at different stages of there life.None of them have done it the same time or way . I have had some start as early as 7 months to 11 months. So try not to panic if they are not going by the book. In fact just throw the book away! lol lol
You know your child not the proffessionals thats all you need. My only question would be is she around other children? Her seeing other children crawling will help. You have fun with that little miracle, bye

unfortunately the children she is around are either over 1 and walking or younger than she is and not rolling over yet. i have wanted to get her into a gym that does mommy and me classes so i can meet other moms that live nearby since i don't know many folks where I live now.
I am so relieved that its okay that she not crawling yet. I have learned now that it will come in time. and i am about to throw awa the books
thanks

Hi Cheryl
Yeah lets have a old fashion book burning!!! OK im only kidding! There is good information in these baby books you just can't let them worry you if your child is not progressing like what they say. Let me know how she does. Do you have AIM?If you do we can chat . Have a good day!

Today she did very well while playng on the floor. i put down a softer blanket to play on and put a framed picture of herself on the blanker becasuse she loves looking at herslef :)...LOL. I am not sure if it helped but whe got up on all 4's more often and actually stayed on all 4's for a min. or 2. she's getting closer and she doesn't whine much anymore when i lay her on her tummy.

Hi Cheryl,
My daughter will be a year on May 31 and she just crawled for the first time on May 13! I just figured she would skip crawling and go straight to walking but I guess not. She was never the type of baby to bounce or ever want to use her legs so I guess she'll walk late too. She's also just now starting to pull herself up onto things but only to her knees, not her feet. Just keep encouraging, don't get frustrated, it will happen when she's ready! Oh, and by the way, once she starts, you'll wish she never had b/c she'll be into everything! : )

shes starting to crawl now! I guess i didn't have to worry after all. With a little more encouragement and after a 10 hour car ride back from vacation she got up the courage. she takes a few steps and falls but she has definately got the idea. Pretty soon i know i will wonder why i worried.

Definitely don't worry! Every child is different. If you start comparing, especially with development, you'll drive yourself crazy. I credit my son's learning to crawl completely to my cats. They would sit just out of his reach. Everytime he'd reach for them, they would move just out of his reach again.

I have an 8 month old son, who is not crawling yet either I dont think you need to worry they will crawl when they are ready. She is showing good mussule control if she is pussing herself up so just encourage her and she will be fine
