Just wondering if anyone has had a son born with hypospadias that has had the surgery done? Doctor said my little one would need it done when he's about a year old, and I just wanted to get some input from anyone who has been through it. Any complications? How was your son after the surgery? Do it...don't do it? Any advice is welcome...thanks.

Hiya Lizzi - the following is my understanding of hypospadias: a defect of the urethral tube in little boys. Usually the opening for urine is at the tip of the penis. In little ones with hypospadias, the opening is located at any point other than the end and is on the underside of the penis. Some are near the end (which is where Wyatt's is), some are in the middle, others are located near the scrotum (which can be quite a problem).

Oh wow! I had no idea! Well,i hope all turns out well for your little one! :) I have heard of where skin grows over the penis hole but not what you've described. Hmm.......I guess i just learned something new didn't I? Thanks for the insight!

My son was born with it. he had the surgery at about 3 years old.. At birth the opening was about 1/2 inch below the glans. After the surgery it pretty much looked normal. I would recommend it if only because my husband didn't get the surgery when he was young and so he has minor problems like dribbling after he urinates and spraying when he does. Okay TMI, sorry, he'd kill me if he saw that!! :)

jamberrt - quite honestly I can't find a good answer to that question myself :( I get the usual "could be genetic, something I took during pregnancy, a fluke...".

OK so I was searching for hypospadias chat place on google and it brought me here. My son has hypospadias. He is 6 months old and had the surgery 1 1/2 weeks ago. It is usually something that medically needs to be done. The decision is usually up to the parent. I highly recommend you go to www.heainfo.org. It is a website for people and parents with hypo. I found it 2 days before my sons surgery, and it has help me A LOT. The also have a message board at www.heainfo.org/forum. My sons hypo was near the scrotum.(considered moderat-severe depending on who u ask) So far it looks as though it is doing well, but we won't know for sure for 2 more weeks at least. If you want to chat with me privately e-mail me at [email protected] or [email protected]. Good Luck, and before you do suregery please go to heainfo. It is free to sign-up

Hey thanks Mom_, I will definitely check out the website. My boy is just coming up on 6 months now, so I have a few more months before he needs to go in. I will prolly have some questions for you, so I will email soon :) Thanks again and I hope your boy is doing well.

Granny2be - I have a couple questions for you. It's been a while since you wrote about your son but I'm going to take my chances. My son is almost 2 1/2 years old. We haven't seen a urologist yet but I'm trying to prepare myself for the worst. How did your son recover from the surgery? Was he already circumcised? Or did he still have his forskin when he had the surgery? I'm kinda upset because his pediatrician never said anything about his penis. We found out recently from another doctor. Not looking forward to this at all!
