Regular use of marijuana can cause psychotic symptoms and possibly a breakdown in certain types of weak personality.

This happened to my ex partner.

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2001 that anyone distributing medical marijuana could be prosecuted. Certain counties in California and a few other states have allowed medical marijuana cards. Shops have opened in those counties to distribute the marijuana. These shops are often SHUT DOWN. Also, State laws are overridden by federal law in this instance so medical marijuana cards are illegal.

Also, some of you say that marijuana has medical benefits. I think you should know that the FDA listed as the three main reasons against the use of marijuana for medical use as:

1. It has a high potential for abuse
2. It has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the USA (no supervised clinical studies have proven its safety and medical benefits)
3. It has a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision

I believe that this poor old dead horse has been flogged to death....

Well bebe, the question was do you believe marijuana should be legalized. Some chose the argument that it has medical benefits and some counties in some states have allowed medical marijuana cards. To debate this topic and argue against this position, I simply pointed out that a Supreme Court decision allows the federal government to arrest anyone using marijuana, even for medical purposes and even in states that have legalized its use. The FDA has issued a statement that marijuana does not offer any safe or proven medical benefits.

JJ, you are giving me laws, I know it is illegal. I am asking for what reasons is marijuana illegal? Because all the reasons we have are the same for alcohol. Read more because there were medical studies, doctors gave it to cancer patients because it had fewer side effects than the standard medication. Why is Marijuana illegal if alcohol is legal?

Name: rain | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 4:23 PM
I just found hundreds of medical marijuana studies on the net.

Bebe, only people who have nothing to contribute to a debate make personal attacks and ask personal questions. Also, I do not live in front of my computer screen so if I do not quickly respond, do not assume it is because I am at a loss for words.

Back on topic. Rain, I personally believe that marijuana has the ability to rob people of their ambitions. Ask yourself this question. Which America would you like to live in? The America where 50 million people smoke pot or the one where people do not? America needs motivated young people, not pot smoking couch potatoes.

So lame I shant take the time to respond. So many people take themselves far too seriously. Life is to short.

We already do. The legalization is not keeping them from doing it. I am saying that all the reasons to keep it illegal would also make alcohol illegal. And I have been thinking of the court system, it would free up time and space for serious criminals.

YES!!! And tax the crap out of it! I think if it were legal there would be a harder crack down on grow ops. I mean the government would be loosing money.....they don't like that. ; )

Judge.Judy, it all up to you whether you want it to control your life or not. just because someone smokes pot doesn't make them a couch potato. i know several people, VERY ambitious, motivated people, that smoke pot on a regular basis..it's part of their daily routine....they have the choice to be a 'couch potato' or get up and live life....all i'm saying is that the drug itself isn't what makes people lazy....my husband is lazier that sh*t, and he doesn't smoke pot at all!!!!! lol.....i would suggest to watch that movie i mentioned earlier "In Pot We Trust" very good show. and there's a few they interviewed that had pot legalized for them for medicinal purposes....i think one of the guys gets about 300 marijuana cigarettes from the gov every 25 days...he smoke about 10 of them a day, and he doesn't slow him down one bit....and there are a few other stories in there, but you should watch it...i've seen more people do damage to themselves from drinking alcohol than smoking pot...but again with alcohol it's your choice if you want it to rule your life. everything you do in life is a "choice", and whatever you choose to do you should have nobody to blame but yourself.

Name: bmes | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:40 PM
and if it became legal, not EVERYONE would decide to smoke it....lol...not EVERYONE drink!!! you don't see an entire nation of drunks do you?

i just think to blame someone's lack of ambition or motivation on smoking pot is a total cop-out. lol

Name: bebe9281 | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:41 PM
Amen!!! I guess I shouldn't have just opened this beer huh?? LOL

Name: bmes | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:45 PM
i guess maybe i see it differently cause i live in a place where it isn't that big of a deal.....idk.....i mean there's still grow-op busts here and they have to do it cause it's there job....but i remember one year there was a big bust and the cops had to burn it all and my hubby crew had to go supervise the burn in case the fire took off, but i bet half the cops there we thinkin "man...this sucks burning all this pot!!" LOL...

I have never met a motivated, successful, and ambitious pot smoker. The ones I have known are the exact opposite. I truly believe it robs people of motivation. It gives them the munchies, cotton mouth and a real desire to zone out. It also has the ability to cause hallucinations, increased heart rate, paranoia, anxiety and many more negative side effects. For young children it is often a gateway drug. Most young people who have used cocaine, acid and other hard drugs first tried pot.

Name: bmes | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:49 PM
again....that's a choice they made themselves.

Name: bmes | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:52 PM
i used to smoke pot TONS!!!!!! not so much anymore cause i have children now....but i won't lie, i like to have the odd toke here and there....but when I did smoke it lots, i still managed just fine...i graduated top of my class, i took courses to become a lifeguard, I had a full time job that I did VERY well.....again....it's what you make of it....

Name: bmes | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:53 PM
maybe you just haven't met the right people....lol

Name: bmes | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:56 PM
or maybe I know alot of ambitious, successful, motivated pot smokers, because where i live it isn't that big of a deal, so people here don't abuse it like in other countries....lol...

Name: rain | Date: Aug 17th, 2007 5:58 PM
I am thinking about this, alcohol kills inhibition so it is the same argument. Maybe I should be asking why is alcohol legal. See if it were illegal then the same things would be said, it causes so many problems. I just realized that when someone asked why is marijuana illegal I had facts that I realized were facts that would make alcohol illegal also. So I had to re-think my views.
I agree I know people who smoke it and they are very ambitious, same with alcohol. I have known burn outs and non functional alcoholics.

your going to have people who abuse everything..Crap i abuse chapstick and soda like there will be none left on this earth in 24 hours..

Not everyone is unmotivated and lazy ans stupid..Like Bmes..when i was smoking more pot..i graduted with a 3.8 GPA and during my senior year in school i had a 4.2 because of honor..Never gotton below a b in college..and graduated trade school at a 95% leets not forget being accepted as one of the only 300 seniors from around the US to study Obstetritics mediine and surgery in Wash DC...I had a career right out of highschool and went to work everyday and managed jobsites, but i was also responsible..i never went to school stoned nor work.

my ex..he is not a smart guy to begin with..does abuse pot, but he is not lazy..he owns his own business..works everyday..never sits down..travels alot..So to say it makes all people lazy is a statement that comes from a view of well seclusion..either you dont know many people who smoke pot or your views of pot are twisted. but of course you can always twist words to fit your views

Rain think of it this way. The American government is taking a harder position against cigarette smoking than it did in the past. Why? Because of the health risks associated with smoking and second hand smoke. Most areas have banned smoking in restaurants, planes, and public buildings. There are some areas of the country which are passing bans on smoking with children in your car due to the dangers of second hand smoke. People who smoke marijuana inhale and hold the smoke in their lungs. Don't you think that this has the potential to have the same adverse effects as cigarrette smoking? Ok so some of you will say bake your pot into your brownies. Studies have shown that eating brownies with pot has a higher concentration of THC which leads to more side effects such as hallucinations. Some of you will say put it in pill form. This has shown to be less effective than smoking with little high. So if it is legalized the most common way to use it will probably be to smoke it. I think this is a step back in thinking in terms of a health conscience America. What do you think relatives of people who have died from lung cancer would think of a government that legalizes marijuana? At the very least it is harmful to people's respiratory systems. Maybe you should try comparing marijuana to tobacco. Why is one legal and the other not? Well, I can say that tobacco smoking has become more heavily regulated by our government and many people who have developed cancer and other respiratory problems would tell you that if they could do it all over again they would not smoke. Did you know that Al Gore's family farmed tobacco while he was growing up? His sister was a smoker of the family tobacco, developed lung cancer and died. Al Gore's father shut down his tobacco farm after that. When people know better they usually do better. I think America's health officials and our government knows the risks of marijuana enough to never make it legal. Cigarette smoking has become more and more regulated by our government in our generation to the point that people can only smoke away from the public. Legalizing marijuana smoking would be a huge step back for public health officials. I think our government knows better due to the lessons learned from cigarette smoking and marijuana will never be legalized. Our government cannot go back in time and prohibit tobacco, but they have heavily regulated where it can be smoked. They would be complete idiots to legalize marijuana knowing all of the health risks associated with it. They know better now and are doing better by not legalizing it!
