Thanks everyone for letting me know about the Strattera. My daughter will be on it starting 1/21/08 and after reading all your letters I feel much more confident in giving it her.

my son is also on Strattera but at nite...otherwise he wont sleep. He takes Medadate in the Morning. I fought the medication @ 1st, then I seen the awsome results. My son makes straight A's in school. That in it's self says a lot. I am the 1st one to say medication is the total answer but there is a time and place for it.

hey guys! my son is five and he's been on strattera for a good couple months, he seems alittle better at home, but at school his teacher says he's gotten alot better. He has no side effects from it other than if we miss aday he will get really emotional. We have tried ritalin, concerta, adderall and geodon in the past. The worst medicene for him to be on was adderall. So hopefully he will continue to have good luck with it and my best wishes to you guys who are just trying it...

Hi, I read what you had to say.... I myself have a 7 year old that has ADD. We have tried all kinds of meds and when I tried Strattera on my son he went crazy. It was like if we had a different child. I'm at my end with all the meds. Not only do the cost a bundle. They are very scary to give to him. I sometimes don't know what to do. If they don't make him crazy they get very aggressive to a point that he hurts himself. I sometimes don't even give him the meds just to have a peaceful day. I would rather have him running around and talking all day. Then having him yelling at us and trying to hurt his sisters.
So it my be good for you and your child but it doesn't work the same on all children.
I just felt you needed to know that all meds work different on children. My child is proof of that.

Have a blessed Day!

Does your son take anything else besides Strattera? I have heard good things about it and am looking for something new to give to my son but wanted to know if he has to take anything else or is that it? I have a friend who gives her daughter Strattera and Focalin so that is why I am asking. Focalin has made my son have sleepless nights and it is very frustrating.
Thanks for the information

Has anyone or anyone's kids experienced really strong suicidal thoughts from this medicine? i've been on it for about a month and it's working, but it's also seriously making me want to kill myself. I've never been a suicidal person, and I really don't feel super sad. it just seems easier than dealing. Can anyone relate?

we are currently going through the same thing. in the middle of trying different meds. We are currently on Adderall. The one he was taking previously was just aweful! He was bouncing off the walls all day every day. This is our first day on Adderall, and I am not sure how it is going. It is just tough. Either they are depressed, moody, over hyper or just all over the board. We will see where this one goes, but thanks for the note!

My son has been on strattera for 1 mo. now, just went up to 25 mg. but can't say I notice any improvement yet, does it take several months to kick in? He is 9, what is a "normal" dosage for that age?

I just started my 15 year old son on Strattera last week, 40mg. The first side effects he noticed were the loss of appetite, dizziness and lightheadedness with headaches. He also said that he was experiencing weird dreams. I did not inform him of any side effects.

He had been on Adderall and Concerta before, but this caused great anxiety in him, especially with Concerta when he felt the surge of dosage it dispelled around lunch time. He said it kind of locked him into his body making it difficult to communicate and move. It also fixated his attention on things for an unusual length of time. I took him off of it. For two years he wasn't on anything.

I hate the idea of medicating my son. He is very intelligent, but struggles in school, especially this year, his first year of high school. He can't keep up with the organization of things, and can't stay focused in class. He often does not have the necessary books, notebooks, supplies, etc. for his classes. I would get emails telling me this on a weekly basis.

Just this past Monday, after being on Strattera a week, I took him off because of a nasty stomach virus. After three days of being off of Strattera, he can't seem to get his head out of a cloud. He has been communicating that he feels as though things aren't as they seem. It's like he's in a dream and things are very foggy. He said at one time, when he was looking at our dog, his mind, for a second, didn't recognize it as being his dog, like a moment of amnesia. Of course by now, I'm worried. Has anyone experienced this sensation after taking their child off of Strattera?

I'm at my wits end. I don't know what to do. And to top it off, he is to increase the dosage from 40 mg. to 60 mg. after being on it for two weeks. I'm scared.

I called the doctor this afternoon. She's out sick and will call me tomorrow.

I would love to know the side effects your son was having with other meds besides the strattera? My daughter has mood swings, depression, afraid something is going to happen to her all the time. Always asking me to watch over her so nothing happens to her. Lots of anxiety. Could the non stim strattera be a better choice? Any help would be great.

Well, my daughter has been on the Strattera for a month now on the 25mg strength, just this week we bumped her up to 40mg. so far she is doing great with no side effects. She had tics with the Focolin and Metadate and now she has no tics at all. She also sleeps great at night, unlike with the stimulants. The only side effects we noticed was that she was very tired the first week and wanted to take naps and go to bed early. But after a month, her body is totally used to it. Note that for the first 3 weeks that she was on Strattera the doctor also wanted her to take her Focolin so the Strattera had time to build up in her system. This idea seemed to work great because for the last week and a half she's only been on the Strattera. We were also able to stop the Clonidine at night too. So we went to just this one med. I am very pleased so far. Hopes this helps.

I am amazed at all the children on drugs these days. Many of the problems are a result of processed foods and lack of supplements. Try neurofeedback, try whole foods, try everything before subjecting them to drugs with side effects and unknown long term side effects.

Yes! It's actually a very good medication! It has some side effects, at least my kids are not eating very good and they have to take it at night since Strattera makes them a little dizzy (I have twin boys).
They started the medication at age 4! Their behavior and attention span started to improve 40-50 days after they started using it.
I am happy with the results and will keep my kids on it as much as they need it.

I just read all the postings and I am feeling as an idiot! I asked my kids' doctor about one of them having this emotional episodes from time to time. Dr said it was not the Strattera. Can it be due to the med???? I am mad! I don't like seen him like that! He is now 6 yrs old and has been on Strattera for 2 years! You can imagine how bad the ADHD was... They were totally out of control. They are better at that... Still like to tease other kids and still don't listen every single time... But inside reasonable limits.
I am just wondering if the emotional episodes are due to the Strattera! He gets very emotional and cries a lot.

hi monica, i was just reading your posts, my son also had the emotional episodes while he was on strattera, he never cried before at anything, then when he startred the med i would be walking down the road with him and he would burst out cying for no reason at all, my son is no longer on strattera (it was making him to aggressive), and he has gone back to not crying at all

My 10 year old son has been on Strattera for a year. We tried a few other drugs and this worked the best. And it fixed his crazy mood swings!
Lately it seems to have worn off a little and I'm torn with upping his dose (currently 25mg) or stopping it after school starts. What's your advice? Also I've heard that he shouldn't take it very long and planned to take him off during the school year. What's your advice on weaning off?
I've found so much negative feedback. I can say we have been very successful with Strattera.
Thanks for your advice!

Our experience so far has been similar to your experience. We were so against the meds, but since he has been on Strattera everything has improved so much. My only concern is that in the past week, I have noticed a neck rolling tic and that is what eventually made us take him off all of the stimulant based drugs. How long has your son been on the Strattera? I think maybe they increased his dosage too quickly.

I think it is important to note that everyone is different, so different medications work better for some than others. I think it is a journey that too many of us have to make. I wish you all the best and hope you find the combination(s) that work for you.

Hello Lynn,

My son is 13 and he has tried several different medications the last being Concerta. He was doing OK on Concerta, but developed tics. His doctor has just commenced him on the Strattera as he feels he has high anxiety as well. I am not sure how it works and would really like some feedback. He has fairly high poor impulse control as well - so does it help in this situation? Many thanks.

Lynn - how long did it take to work? I just started strattera with my boy (aged 6, hyper and autistic) 5 days ago. I think I see a difference, but am I imagining it this soon?

Sugar Mama - my son has been on strattera for 6 years (he is 13). We gave him the capsules whole in pudding or applesauce at first. One big swallow and there is no taste. By the way, we've hit the max dosage and are now to trying giving it in the morning rather than at night (11pm) This has worked for so long that I am anxious about the change. Anyone else see a change in how long it takes to kick in for teens rather than younger children??

i have been reading thes comments and i see most of you are judging the success of the drug by how it affects behavior. i have been on strattera for about two months and now i dont eat, i dont even like food anymore. i dont sleep for more then five minutes at a time, i know because everytime i blink the clock changes. i have major mood swings if i actually do feel emotions. i am happy sad angry or apahetic. thats the extent of my emotional range. mentally i can focus more, but switching focus is another thing all together. i zone out all the time. moving takes more of an effort. if i have to move quickly i lose motor function and cant think fast enough to do what i need to do. im glad it worked for your son, but ths drug has a dark side that i hate. i cant get off of it because my father wants to keep me on it. i am only 17, so i cant really do anything about it if thats what he wants, although i have expressed my opinion on this drug. thank you for reading.

My son became depressed on Strattera also. The pediatrician explained that some kids need "stimulant meds" while others need "non-stimulants". In our case, my son needed stimulants. I am glad that Strattera is working for you. I think every child is different and the pediatrician just needs to work through everything with kids and parents until they find the right meds.

To: James, who's post is right before mine. I am so sorry to hear about your fight with this med. They tried my 17 yr old on Focalin when he was 11 but it made him nervous and eventhough he could concentrate better, we felt the side effects weren't worth the risks. That's why I ask my 13 yr old son who has been on Focalin since he was 5 how the meds make him feel, is he eating o.k. and any other problems he might have and that he may associate with his meds. Can I give you one suggestion? Never go against your parents but the next time you want to express your opinion it might be best to do it at the doctor's office at your ADHD checkup. The doctor might be able to explain to your dad the bad side effects and the problems that go along with people with ADHD taking the wrong meds. I hope you find help before but if you don't, when you turn 18, talk to your doctor about making some of the decisions for yourself. Don't swear off meds completely but work with your doctor. Everybody's system in their bodies are different and sensitive to different things. What is good for one person is not necessarily good for someone else. I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR YOUR POST. It reminded me to keep talking to my youngest son about any potentially bad side effects he might have now or might develop in the future and to listen to him. NOT SURE IF YOU'LL READ THIS POST AGAIN BUT IF YOU DO, HANG IN THERE! AND THANKS AGAIN FROM A PARENT OF A TEENAGE SON WITH ADHD!
