Hi, Need some informantion...I recently acquired a dog..We bought from a yard sale..Was told it was full blood boxer.. We have had several people come to our house asking where we got our Pitt Bull..Im going back to the place where i got her from to see if i can look at the parents of the puppy..But if they cant show me the parents..How do i tell if i have a boxer, pit, or boxer/pit mix??Can the vet tell by just looking? We are in a town that does not allow pitt bulls..Any advice on telling a boxer from a pit would be loads of help!!The more we look at boxer and pitt pictures, the more she looks like a pitt..She has all the features?Anyways, thanks for any information.

I have a 14month old American (Pit Bull) Terrier I also have a 19month old babbie and a 12 year old girl my dog loves them and they love the dog. What kind of things are done to your dog to make people afraid of it.

definately not! that would be another loss of thousands for pitbulls! you should go for educating these descriminators. do some pitbull reaserch and get farmiliar with the pitbull history and use it to your advantage! you can even join a supportive group. it may be just one pitbull kicked out of a home but it could also be one of over 800 every year to get put to sleep for no reason. so do whats right for your dog and your family. even educate your kids. show your support for this wonderful breed and stick up for your pet. dont let others put you down because of thier ignorance and the fact that they are uneducated! infact 1% of a hundred reported dog attacks on humans are from pitbulls! and thats only because other breeds resemble them and are blamed for being a pitbull. so hopefully you will make the right choice. good luck!

i too have an overly protective pitbull.
i dont think anyone should ever get rid of an animal, there are many other solutions to your problem. i personally place my 120 lb red nose pitbull in a crate when we have company. i used to think this was cruel, having him crated while my other two pits were allowed to be free, however, baby finds his crate to be a wonderful refuge, often staying in there when the doors are open.
a protective animal, while somewhat frustrating, is also a blessing in disguise. you dont need worry about your children, your house is safe, and you neednt worry about people robbing your home.
all three of my pitbulls are rescues. the male that i spoke of earlier, was owned by an abusive drug dealer, whom gave baby up to settle a drug debt, and then baby was passed from family to family, until the shelter and a long permenant nap were to be his fate.
the reason i bring this up is, the shelters dont keep pits... they put them to sleep. very few shelters are no kill shelters.
please ...PLEASE... try every other possibility before giving up your "baby"... after all, he is doing what he or she is bred to do... PROTECT... you and your wonderful family...
if the cost of the crate is an issue, you can often find them in the penny pincher or other local publications, for very reasonable prices, or free.
also, if this aggression issue becomes too much to handle, please research other options.
in the bay area there is an organization called"badrap" bay area doglovers responsible about pitbulls... or in the philly area there is an organization called rottenrotty...im sure there is a similar org around your area
these sorts of orgs. find homes or facilitate the finding of homes for animals that are no longer wanted, or cant be cared for.
i am sorry for rambling, but i feel strongly about our family members that cant speak for themselves....
your dog loves you, and would do anything for you, please return the favor.

Eric, great advice!

Bruce~ You may want to take your dog to a vet. Many dogs do develop cysts, some cysts may not be life threatening but others can be.

My Best Friend Has A Pittbull And A Couple Of Our Friends Are Scared To Death Of Him. Although We Often Wonder Why Because He Is The Friendliest Most Loving Animal I Have Ever Met. Well, Anyway We Usually Put Him In A Kennel In The Basement For A Couple Hours At A Time While We Have Them Over, Then Every Once In A While We Will Go Down And Play With Him And Then Put Him Back Up. Could You Do Something Like That? Because It Would Be A Shame If You Had To Give Up Something So Dear To You.

I raised and bred pitbulls for ten years, my dogs were great with people especially kids. The problem with bad pitbulls is the breeders. These young dumd s.o.b's think that a pitbull is suppose to be mean, so they breed man aggresive males to man aggresive females and end up with man aggresive pups , then they sale them to unknowing people who turn around and breed that pup, and the cycle continues.pitbulls are great dogs if you get them from a good breeder. Now with that being said at some point in their life they may become animal aggresive, you don't have to train a pitbull to fight like the media would have you believe, put it like this you don't have to train a coonhound to put it's nose on the ground.

i own pitbulls (4 of them) and my biggest key to success with this breed is excercise excercise excercise. they are not dumb and very much like to have a job. if your dog is overly aggressive try walking the dog for 45 mins before allowing him to be around other people. also children are nothing but energy and the dog will feed off of that. don't allow the children to run right up to the dog screaming and hollering that will immediately trigger the dog into a level ten energy as well. keep things alittle more calm and set boundaries for the dogs. he can only play certain games or be around the children at certain times. it should be just as much work with the children as the dog! good luck.

I have a 2 year old pit and a 1 year old pit I also 5 kids rangin in age from 1 year to 11 years old. Anyone can come around thver them including othe adults or kids you need to let other kids around just not yours you may be able to save your pit with some tough love. I utilize the dog cage alot for discipline even though some dog trainers will tel you not to do that. I have owned 4 pits over the last 15-17 years and have never had a bad one yet it all how you raise them my dogs are 100% family dogs do they get mean sometimes yes they do when I want them to. Don't be afraid to for a lack of better words whoop there ass when they act up if not they will run the show and then you r screwed. In the bully breed when you let them get by with it once then it automatically becomes ok in there minds you better break them of acting up when other kids come around. I use lots of treats to reward for good behavior. I read your thing again and I think I have the same problem with someof my kids parents they think that auto because its a pit they dont want there kids around it what a bunce of crap. Dont give him up talk him up be a breed advocate.
